CAR and DRIVER Bordeaux September 2012

A friend and I will be visiting Bordeaux from September 12 to the 18 and while we plan on taking a couple of the organized wine chateau tours, we also are scheduling visits to some wineries around Saint Emilion on two days and need a car and driver. We assume that hiring a professionald company will cost a good bit more than we can afford and so are looking for a person who knows the area and could spend 6 hours each day driving us around the St Emilion area. We will be spending the night in a hotel in the village. We certainly will appreciate hearing from someone with any suggestions.

Is there a reason that you cannot drive yourself? Driving in France isn't much different than driving in the US.

A regular Trip Advisor contributor might be just the man. He obviously won't be able to recommend himself so I'll do it for him:

And this person does mainly taxis but also wine trips:

When doing a lot of tastings, a driver isn't a bad idea -- French DUI laws are strict (0.05) and there is no leeway given, even for a first offense. If your BAC is high enough they will impound your car on the spot and imprison you.

If you haven't found anyone yet, I can do it if it's not the 15th or 16th.

So - you're wanting someone to drive you up to 6 hours a day for free?

Thats what will have to happen, because if they are stopped for breath testing they will also inspect the documentation for insurance etc. If the police suspect at all that the car is being used in return for money but isn't insured as such, it will be impounded, the driver fined, and you left to walk home.

If the car is involved in an accident then the driver will face jail for driving uninsured, and any injury/damage to your property will be uninsured too. There will also be the possibilty of a tax investgation if it was suspected it wasn't the first time the driver had "worked" without declaring the income.

We have to carry: a copy of the booking contact to prove the booking was made before we collected the client, and our public liability/public carriage insurance documents. The need for the correct insurance is just one of the reasons that using professional companies is expensive.

It may not happen that you are stopped for any reason, but they are many cases a year of this happening - weddings are a favorite target, as are cars full of people in the wine producing area of Vouvray.
