Public transportation - Colmar to Freiburg

We are staying in Colmar over Christmas to see the Christmas markets in the area, and are interested in seeing the one in Freiburg. What is the best way to get to Freiburg via train and/or bus, or is it best to rent a car?

Thank you,

Mark

There are reasonably frequent trains, taking 1.5 to 2.5 hours with a change at Basel, and mostly costing €39.20. You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at www.tgv-europe.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" on the first screen to avoid being transferred to RailEurope, which has much higher prices and does not list all the trains.

Depending on how many of you there are, a rental car might be cheaper.

There is a bus service line 1076 from Colmar railway station to Freiburg. This is the current information - sorry it's in French and you'll probably need to enlarge it.

Note that the timetable is for 2011, but I suspect it will be updated around 12 December 2011 so make sure you check to see if the times stay the same. Colmar Tourist Office should have an up-to-date copy so you could call in and see them when you're actually here in Colmar.

Please note that Freiburg's Christmas Market closes just before Christmas, whilst Colmar's is open between Christmas and New Year if that helps your planning. And do make sure that you try the DAMPFNUDELS - steamed bread buns with cherries and hot vanilla sauce - on Freiburg market!!! Not for calorie counters but definitely something different that I only see at Christmas here! Also the potato cakes - KARTOFFELPUFFERS - with apple sauce are good for keeping the cold out! I always find Freiburg colder than Colmar especially in the winter.

The Christmas market is centred around the Rathaus (Town Hall) square.

Do NOT take a hire car unless it has WINTER TYRES as it is German law that all cars must have winter tyres between 1 Oct and 31 Mar if the temperature is lower than 7 °C. You also should have a green windscreen sticker to prove you've paid the environmental tax, which a French hire car might not have.

Incidentally, don't miss the regular market around the Cathedral (Munster). The Christmas market opens at 10, the regular one from much earlier and also closes for the day at lunchtime.
