Calais to Alsace toll road costs

Hi there

We will be driving from Calais to Alsace in October. Does anybody know the toll road costs for the A26?

Many thanks

Jo

Only one toll by this route. The Maurice Lemaire tunnel from Lusse to Ste Marie aux Mines is expensive at €16.90 for Class 2 vehicles (car and caravan) but saves a tortuous hairpin descent through the Vosges. If you are heading for Ribeauville don't take the signposted road on the right after exiting the tunnel. It's through a steep mountain forest, very scenic but no fun with caravan. Continue towards Selestat where you can join the N83(E25). Dual carriageway section of the main north/south autoroute A35. (also toll free).

We go: Calais, Ypres (worth a stop for evening memorial service at Menin Gate)., Luxembourg, Metz, Nancy, Luneville, St Die; Maurice LeMaire tunnel, Chatenois, Ribeauville. Toll free autoroutes, but oh! those Belgian potholes, makes it feel like home. Only found in the inside lane though where the trucks have done their worst.

Have fun in October, wine harvest time. Should be good. Hot here at present, high thirties-nice in daytime but humid nights.

I don't think the OP wanted information about overnights or towing a caravan though your routing is interesting Derek.

As Sunshine rightly says www.viamichelin.fr is your friend for all the routes and costs (petrol and tolls). Personally I wouldn't bother with the tunnel at Ste Marie aux Mines which is a bit out of the way for Colmar, tends to get closed without warning.

My choice of routes - you can check the costs - are:-

1. A26 Calais-Rheims, A4 Rheims-Strasbourg, A35 Strasbourg-Colmar.

2. A26 Calais-Rheims, A4 to A26 south junction, down to Chalons and St Dizier, N4 to Nancy, N33 to Lunéville, N59 Lunévillé-St Dié, D415 Col de Bonhomme-Kaysersberg-Colmar.

3. A26 Calais Rheims, A4 to Metz, turn south A31for Nancy and continue as above on the N33 etc.

Motorways do have service stations that keep longer hours for meals and snacks, and certainly 24/24 petrol. The N4 route can mean you have problems in keeping your car and your tummy full if you travel outside regular eating/working hours.

Note that one of the cheaper places to fuel up before you head south on the A26 is to take Exit 3 - Z A Marcel Doret and Université and head into town for approx 800m before coming across the Carrefour supermarket complex. You can get petrol at a fair price here ... certainly less than the motorways. I don't think the automatic pumps take UK credit cards (yet!) but the employee in the cash booth will be happy to take your plastic during store hours ... approx 8 am-8 pm closed Sundays.

Going via Belgium saves a lot on tolls and is only about 25km longer. Don't forget to fill up as you go through Luxembourg.

But remember that it will take you forever to queue for petrol with everyone else!!

Diesel €1.18 litre, about £1.02 at Esso Leudelange.

No queues, and a good shop and restaurant, with free wifi.

Hellos,

Planning our first caravan drive to Italy in 2014.

Calais to Milan-ish.

Happy to take 3 or even 4 days to make the journey part of the holiday.

so....having read lots of replies about routes etc,

cost of tolls, petrol, Swiss motorway passes, mountains, tunnels, hairpin bends etc etc....

has anyone actually driven this route with a caravan.......

found any good sites for overnight stops en route,

got any good suggestions of where to stay in north Italy, near lakes

maybe even within striking distance of a day (or 2) trip to Venice???

yes I want it all!!

Ronald
