Can anyone suggest a good spot for a base, from where we can do short walks (from 1-5hrs/day) but return each evening as we cannot carry our luggage and don't want anything too organised. Could be France, or nearby countries. Thanks

Hi, have you looked at assisted walking tour options where you do the walks yourselves, with supplied maps & notes, accommodation in villages booked, and your bags transported for you each day?

We just did a 4 night one in Provence with The Enlightened Traveller company and loved it, but there are other companies out there who organise these too.

'could be France or nearby countries' certainly opens it up to endless possibilities!

I've had some great holidays based in Chamonix or nearby villages, great walks literally outside the door with the advantage of during the summer you can take the cable cars up the mountains and do some relatively level walking with fantastic views, reaching another lift to come down if you dont fancy the descent

Hi rosaBrisbane

I suggest you have a look at the Alpes Maritimes in the south of France. There are lots of varied walks of the distances you are wanting. You could base in one of the cities or the many villages. Here are some of the non guided walks and information about more:

where2walk.co.uk/the-alpes-maritimes-france/

The best times for walking in the Alpes Maritimes are spring and autumn, the summer is an option but it gets hot, winter too but the high mountains get snow.

There is some good info on there about walks in the UK too. Jon is a real walking guru he will help you if you ask.

Hope that helps

Best

If you fancy something flatter than the Alps, but still in France then Belleme in the Perche National Parc in Normandy, is a good option, the Tourist Office there has a small brochure of 9 good walks around the town, varying in time duration, and difficulty. The Perche has very pretty "dreamy" countryside.

In the UK there are fantastic walks in the Lake District, Peak District and many other areas. The UK has several National Trails, eg Hadrians wall. You can find companies that will transport your main luggage for you and sort out your accommodation each night, so that you can concentrate on the walking "getting somewhere different" and enjoying the scenery!

Also the Parc Regional des Grande Causses around and to the South of Millau -- lots and lots of walks across the plateaus, and ancient Templar villages (La Couvertoirade and others.) it's also the land of Roquefort cheese! There are many little bed and breakfasts and farms where you can rent lodging or get a meal -- much information on the website Larzac.org and also on the tourist information website for Millau or Aveyron.
