For me, it's The Crown and Anchor next to Harvey Nichols, it attracts a good selection of age groups, a varied clientele and the staff are happy to serve you. I still dream about The Wellington Inn many years ago, when the landlady served those large slices of warm pork pies with your pint.

I like Britons Protection, although the last few times I've been there the range of ales has been limited to very "samey" 4% abv bitters or pale ales. In fact, I haven't seen any exciting looking beers there for a long time, e.g. a decent stout, porter, strong IPA or craft beer. It is a nice old pub though with lots of character and a great beer garden (even though it's rained on the last 2 pub crawls I've done of Manchester!)

Which is why Port Street Beer House wins hands down - a great range of obscure beers, lagers and ciders covering all palates. I've never had a bad pint there, but it can get busy on a Friday and Saturday evening, which is why I try and go at other times when I go to Manchester. I'm not too keen on the doorman they have on Friday and Saturday evenings either; but I suppose it keeps away the riff-riff and proves just how popular this watering hole is.

Cheers! ;-)

P.S. when I was last in the Britons Protection back in September I had a pint of Britons Protection ale. It turned out to be bog standard pint of Bass but renamed, which even the barman confirmed! :-/

Good calls for Cask,Bar Fringe,Marble Arch,Port Street Beer house,Knott Bar,New Oxford add The Castle Oldham Street.

All offering a wide range of choice, the BP ,Deansgate, and others mentioned are nice pubs to visit, but ,big but too, serve the same old same old IMO.
