Hi myself, hubbie and 14yr old son are travelling to Machester this wkend from Ireland to attend the Man U match. We are staying in "The Place Hotel Apartments". We arrive in Manchester Airport tomorrow morn about 11.00 am can anyone suggest the best way to get to our hotel. Also would u suggest heading to Old Trafford early and what is the best way to get there from our hotel. Thanks

"The Place" is right next door to Manchester's Piccadilly station. The easiest way to get there is to take a train from Manchester Airport, which will take you into Manchester Piccadilly station in about 10/15/20 minutes (depends on # of stops). You're less than 2 minutes walk from the main door of Piccadilly staton (there's a good map on the hotel website).

Suggest you use the Metrolink (a suburban tram/railway service) to get to Old Trafford - pick up some details at Piccadilly station.

at airport get train to Piccadilly station the palace apartment hotel is just a 2 min walk north towards centre

Most trains from airport goto Piccadilly station

Then my advice is to get tram to ground. which you can get at Piccadilly or anywhere you see the stops on the line. there are very frequent so you wont be waiting long. get a east bound service for eith Eccles or Altringham then you have about 3 to 5 mins walk to ground either from the old Trafford Cricket Ground or ????? Quay i think.

You can also get trains from picadilly and there are usually etxra services on matchdays someone at station should be able to advise

You cant really go wrong everyone is heading same place and other than tram will be full you wont have any problems.

re: the tram

Altrincham line - get off at Old Trafford

Eccles line - get off at Exchange Quay

Going to the match early? Only if you want to spend some time in the souviner shop. Not too much else around there.

5.15pm kick off tomorrow so, I'd suggest getting a tram at around 3.30pm. This will give you plenty of time - you'll be at the ground at least an hour before kick off.

Enjoy the game - I'll see you there ;)

Great night in Manchester on Saturday. Fifth time I've made the pilgrimage to Old Trafford. And even though I've seen some great victories there (including the 6-1 demolition of Arsenal six years ago and the 3-2 victory against A.C. Milan in the Champions League last season), last night's match was the most special so far at Old Trafford.

We were seated in the South Stand two rows away from the touchline mid-way between the half way line and the Stretford end of the stadium. Because all six goals were scored on our 'final quarter of the pitch', we had a superb view of not only the goals, but the build ups including the wonderful move involving Carick, Rooney, Tevez and finally Ronaldo, whose second goal was made in heaven.

On the flight home, there was a 10 year old kid from Coolock who was celebrating his tenth birthday in Manchester. He was completely thrilled with the whole Old Trafford experience, looking forward to returning to school on Monday to 'sock it to' the Liverpudlian supporters in his class, and especially to reminding them that they'd only drawn 1-1 with less than exciting Middlesbrough side.

Cant believe you posted that. There is plenty to do in a morning or even a full day.

Apart from the obvious Man U Museum & shop there is the nearby Lowry Centre with discount designer shops, restaurants and Cinemas and the Lowry Art Gallery itself and then next door is the Imperial War Museum and the network of the modernised Salford Quays and its pubs and restaurants which are fine for prematch atmosphere and family meals. All within 20 minutes walk of OT
