Probably the best travel web site in the world -

www.seat61.com

All you ever wanted to know about trains but were afraid to ask...

or www.trainline.co.uk for routes

you'll probably need at least one change.

It's actually www.thetrainline.com for tickets, the shortest journey time is about three and a half hours, changing in lancaster.

You'll be travelling from manchester picadilly to Edinburgh Waverley.

You can book online if you register, or just pop down to your nearest station or call national rail enquiries on 08457 484950.

Assuming you don't have a rail card, prices start at £30 return if you book far enough in advance and know exactly when you want to travel. Going up to about £150 for a totally flexibe ticket.

If you're under 26, a full time student, travelling with your family or over 65, it might be worth paying £20 for a railcard as you'll save a third off your fare and so could easily make back the price of the card in one journey.
