From the USA- last minute flight bargains in late Winter?

This isn't just for visiting Sligo although I think I'll start there. I am in the early stages of planning a visit in late winter, early Spring to look at traditional Seisuns in village pubs throughout some parts of Ireland. Can anyone tell me how much luck they've had in getting last minute flight deals from USA (I'm near Boston) to either Shannon or Dublin? Same question for B&Bs. I will probably be traveling alone and it'll be my third trip to Ireland. I'd love to save some money and don't want to book this far ahead if the air prices might drop after the the New Years for late Winter travel. Any thoughts? Thanks all!

Can't help you with the flight query but if you plan to start your trip in Sligo and are using public transport only then we'd recommend that you look into flights into Dublin - the train from central Dublin to Sligo town is direct and around the 3 hour mark whereas the journey from Shannon to Sligo involves 2-3 buses and will take longer even with slick connections...

For trad music within Sligo town itself check out:

Two village venues within Co. Sligo, accessible by bus, that you should look into are:

Barrys in Grange

The Coleman Centre in Gurteen

And as always with the rural trad music scene do ask around (particularly in the places listed above) as most sessions are rarely advertised and are usually spontaneously organised within the preceding day or two ;-)

Thanks very much Ragoora. Sligo came up before as a good part of Ireland for Seisuns. I know that I am gambling a little bit on the chances of there being some Seisuns being run while I happen to be where ever it is that I am. ButI have much more research to do and hopefully will be able to narrow down some towns, as accessible as you have shown me, where I might be lucky!

There are a couple of pub venues (Brennan's, Killoran's, Mickey Mac's to name three) in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo where you will be almost guaranteed some luck for what you are looking for but not necessarily on any fixed night - Tubbercurry is actually a town but is small and feels more like a village to be honest. It has some incredible links to Irish trad music history, particularly with fiddle playing, and there are several small plaques commemorating this in the town square:

Back to the Dublin-Sligo trainline route you may want to stop off at Boyle in Co. Roscommon too if you're travelling on a Saturday - the Farmer's Market (10:00-14:00) usually has a group of trad musicians playing in the market place which makes a nice change to a dark pub:

Buy some homemade bread, some hand-churned butter, some local farmhouse cheese and have yourself a musical picnic :-)

Thanks again! Now if I could just get a few Americans to chime in about the flight bargains, I'd be all set! I can taste the bread and cheese now...

I remember getting my best deal BOS-DUB on Aer Lingus (non-stop) right before Christmas time. The prices DO fluctuate greatly.

But that was in late '06 for travel in '07, so I don't know what the prices are doing now. I'll be watching this as I want to travel back to Ireland in May of '11.

hard to answer...once i got a trip for $480.39 (will never forrget that price, best deal i ever had for ireland) in october, for may travel....then in 2005 i got one for $522.00 and that was from dallas to new jersey to dublin and out shannon....so just keep checking every day, you may find a bargain...

try aer lingus as was suggested, they really have some good deals from time to time from the east coast....

Yup, thanks, I'll keep checking. We have friends who got a last minute RT from Boston a couple of years ago, right before Valentine's Day for around $200 each. It was a last minute thing and they took there chances on finding places to stay but ended up having a great time. I'll try to keep you informed when I find my "best" rate!
