How to get to Clonmacnoise & Rindoon

Hello! I am traveling to Ireland in April and very much want to visit Rindoon and on to Clonmacnoise, and from there, other suggestions nearby appreciated. I am a college student traveling by bus and train as cheaply (hostels) as possible. What would be the best way (bus wise) to get to Rindoon for a visit and then get to Clonmacnoise? I would like to take the Viking Mike boat tour out of Athlone to Clonmacnoise. Where might I stay? Any hostels in the area? Thank you!

Hello Victoria,

First of all, Clonmacnoise and Rindoon (Rinn Dun) are in different directions. Athlone is in Co Westmeath with excellent bus and train connections.

Clonmacnoise is in Co Offaly, just shy of 15 miles south of Athlone:

Rindoon is near the village of Lecarrow, in Co Roscommon, 10 miles or so, north of Athlone, on the N61:

South County Roscommon Heritage Trail, although limited if not traveling by car:

You could look at staying in a B&B in Athlone. Prices are per person.

Not sure if these tours from Athlone to Clonmacnoise run year round:

Getting a taxi (or, better yet a hackney) from Athlone would be the best option getting to Lecarrow and Rindoon.

A hackney is a kind of taxi which cannot be hailed and with which you agree in advance an overall price for the trip, rather than a running metered charge.

One early-ish bus here from Athlone to Roscommon, via Lecarrow. Please note Lecarrow is a request stop: you request the stop or the bus breezes through:

Thank you for your kind reply and information. If I could catch the bus from Althone to Lecarrow, then walk the short distance to Rindoon, I guess then my main problem would be the way back as I'm thinking the bus travels by once per day? I had planned to take a Viking Mike boat ride from Althone to Clonmacnoise. Ten miles actually isn't that bad to walk back, would be an adventure perhaps! :) then, I could take the boat to Clonmacnoise and find a good place to stay the night there before continuing on. :) does that seem feasible?

Yes, as far as I can discern, the 461 bus from Athlone you would catch in the morning gets you to Lecarrow around 7.35am.

The bus travels on to the town of Roscommon and returns at once to Athlone, passing Lecarrow again at 8.20am. Would leave you very little time to do anything.

Virtually all the traffic through Lecarrow heading south would be going into Athlone. There are a couple of pubs in the village: Coffey's and Kelly's.

As well as The Yew Tree restaurant. If any of them are open by the time you are leaving, they might know someone going into Athlone; or, be heading that way themselves.

Have you looked at the (current) timetable for the Athlone to Clonmacnoise Viking Boat Tours? Very few confirmed dates, as yet, for the month of April.

Am I correct in understanding you want to stay in the Clonmacnoise area; and, not return to Athlone?

The walk to Rindoon from Lecarrow village is about 3Km; if this rates as short in your estimation, then perhaps you might be energetic enough to consider the flexibility that renting a bicycle might offer you.

Basing yourself in Athlone, you could rent a bike for two days for €25 which would allow you to visit both your chosen destinations without the restriction of bus timetables.

I would also wonder if there would be much availability for boat tours in the month of April, except perhaps around the Easter holiday period.

Thank you all for the very good information! It is good to know the bus schedule. I see a few dates for April for the boat tour. I'm open for staying anywhere in the area. The idea of renting a bicycle also sounds fun! Do you know who rents them and possible contact information?

These links might help in a general way, with keeping within a budget:

Not sure how long your overall trip to Ireland will be. Maybe, one of these Bus Eireann tickets would work for you:

http://www.buseireann.ie/inner.php?id=352

This might be worth looking at, although the prices quoted are 'per person, sharing' (pps).

Nothing to lose by asking about the deal, especially if you're in Athlone - or elsewhere - on quiet week nights. (Sunday through Thursday).
