City of Culture

Limerick is City of Culture for 2014. It all starts with a river side concert on New Years Eve. Plenty for everyone over the course of the year.

From The Toronto Star, a recent article highlighting some of what Limerick city has to offer.

Foynes is also featured. Special mention for the welcome from an Immigration Officer at Shannon Airport:

The Frank McCourt Museum is situated in Leamy's School

And Una Heaton is absolutely brilliant. A fantastic woman. She does Limerick City a great service.

Regarding the actual city of culture - so far it has passed many of us by!! The internal squabbles sadly seem to be taking precedence.

Galway? Culture? Do tell...

Galway is a beautiful costal tourist town, it is the party/stag capital of Ireland...but Culture...I'm sorry I can't agree with that...

Limerick has actual cultural credentials, it has produced a lot more culture than Galway, it also has a lot more performance venues (UCH/Lime Tree/Dolans) it also has a lot more museums (Hunt/Jim Kemmy Museum/Frank McCourt/Thomond Park) it also displays a much more colourful history (King Johns Castle/St Marys Cathedral/Georgian District)which is very evident once you take off the blinkers.

Politically/Sporting/Culturally it is s much more significant city, I get why people do not flock to Limerick in the same numbers as Galway, I have no problem with that, but we have suffered from enough misperceptions as it is...you cannot deny history or culture.
