Lough Gur - Congratulations to Lough Gur Development

Lough Gur Development have just taken over the management of Lough Gur Heritage Centre. The centre was officially opened by Sean Kelly MEP yesterday.

The centre will now be staffed by local volunteers.

We visited today and were very impressed. We watched a video presentation and then there was a tour given of the exhibits by local historian Michael Quinlan. Michael is an excellent speaker and a fount of knowledge.

The area surrounding the heritage centre is excellent for walks and we enjoyed sitting in the sunshine, overlooking the lake.

Definately worth a visit if you are in the Mid-West or North Cork area.

And if anyone is interested in volunteering their time to help out at this fabulous centre, please contact the development committee.

Correction - from Mr Bean.... It was opened by Jimmy Deenihan, Minister for Arts, Culture and Tourism. But Sean Kelly was there :o)

I, agree Harvey, it is a wonderful site. Hopefully it will go from strength to strength.

Sign of the resessionary times we are living in I guess and why shouldn't local communities get involved in running public amenities like heritage centres, museums, genealogy centres, theatres etc. County Councils can't afford to run them, so let volunteer commitees have an imput instead.

Great news indeed. Thanks for posting. We used to go to Lough Gur a lot when we were younger and after a long absence we drove there last summer and had a really great day. It was a really warm when we visited and the ice cream van sold out of ice cream! In fact a friend on mine went ice skating when the lake was frozen over last winter! We will most definately have to make a return visit soon
