2 days in Galway

Our group of 10 will be driving to Galway from killarney on June 17 and are staying 2 nights. We then spend our last night, the 19th near Shannon before flying home. We plan to go to the Aran Islands one day and are trying to plan another day and possible part of the third. Any suggestions on what we should see on our way from Killarney or things the last two days? Thanks!

Most of the 17th will be taken up by the trip and getting settled into wherever you're staying in Galway, right? So the 18th will be off to the Arans? And the 19th off to the Shannon area?

The Arans is a full day, so your remaining time in Galway would be great just for wandering. Shopping, pubs, maybe a city bus tour. Maybe a trip out to Salthill for a walk along the promenade if the weather is decent.

On the way to Shannon on the 19th, stop at the Cliffs of Moher if you haven't already seen them during your travels.

Actually, the 19th is off to Shannon so we have one more day in Galway. I am thinking that we will see the Cliffs of Mohr on the way to Galway but don't know if there will be enough time.

Thanks for your response.

Hi Irishtraveler10:

We also went from Killarney to Galway after spending 3 days in Killarney. Killarney is lovely. If you can do the Gap of Dunloe tour, which is a 7 mile drive through a mountain pass in a horse-drawn cart (holds 4 people). The views are spectacular and it is a fantastic ride. After your horse-drawn ride, you will enter a large rowboat that will take you over the lakes for a 13 mile ride (again, spectacular scenery). Your final destination will be right in front of Ross Castle (you can tour inside) and adjacent to Muckross Park. It was the highlight of our trip through Ireland. Here's a website w/ some info on Killarney and the Gap Tour:

http://www.vacationkillarney.com/Gap-trip.htm

It took us 2 hr. to drive from Killarney to Galway, and we traveled on a Sunday with light traffic. Depending upon what time you arrive in Galway, check into your hotel or B&B, you will only have 1/2 day left. We did the double decker bus tour of Galway City, which was about an hour in length. Very nice overview of the city.

The Aran Islands is indeed a full day trip. Are you making that trip from Galway? If so, you will have to drive to Rossaveal to catch the ferry. It is a 45 min. ride from Galway and then another 45 min. ride on the ferry. You can bike, hike, take a horse-drawn cart or just plain walk there. It is a very interesting place to visit. Not exactly scenic, but a different experience. Never saw so many rocks in our lives! LOL

If you still have another day, I would suggest a tour of the Connemara region. Absolutely spectacular scenery. Stop and visit Kylemore Abbey. Beautiful grounds, nice gift shop (inexpensive prices also) and a cafeteria w/ reasonable prices. You could easily spend a couple of hours there touring the gardens, the church on the premises, etc. The Abbey is now an exclusive private girls' school.

We never did get to see the Cliffs of Moher. We had 8 days and still didn't have enough time. Next trip for that.

On our last night, we spent it at a B&B in Bunratty. It is about a 15 min. drive to the airport from there. You can explore the castle, do some more shopping at the Bunratty Woolen Mills (right across the street from the castle). Don't forget to stop at Durty Nellie's for that last drink b4 you head home. They have good burgers there also.

Enjoy your trip. Give us a trip report when you return.

2 hours Killarney to Galway?? How much was the rental for the helicopter? :)

(Seriously, did it really only take you 2 hours?)

Hi Irishfan,

Yes it did, believe it or not! We left our hotel in Killarney at 10:30 am and were on Forster St. Galway at 12:30 pm. There was literally no traffic on the roads! We were also traveling by taxi and left the driving to him! LOL
