Things to do in Galway

Hi! We are planning a trip to Ireland for the Fall and will be in Galway for a day (25 Sep - 26 Sep). Since we hardly have any time, what are the MUST-hit things to do/see in Galway? For context, we are three late 20 - early 30s females.

Thanks!

Salthill is a must see! Just grab a bus from the bottom of Eyre Square (the big park in middle of city) and walk along the promenade, visit couple of bars or casinos. Galway city has great shops and it is a beautiful city also so thats worth a try.

What to do depends on your interests!!!

If you like swimming there is a water complex in Salthill called Leisureland. The national aquarium of ireland is also located in salthill

Spa - one in Radisson sas hotel in the city.

You could take a bus eireann tour to the cliffs of moher check www.buseireann.ie for their tours departing galway city

galway city museum located in spanish arch just minutes walk from the city centre beside the River Corrib is fantastic also

Use one of your days to take a ferry to the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway check www.aranislandferries.com for info on this - highly recommended trip

Food - you have to try Mc Donaghs fish and chips shop for the best fries in ireland. Also Cactus Jacks just off spanish arch is a beautiful restaurant. Galway has a vibrant night life so visit Cuba in the centre of the city or any of the numerous bars and clubs.

Thats all I can think of for now hope it helps!

there are plenty of historical sights and lovely walks to see in the centre of galway if you only have the one day - venture down to the Spanish Arch, just opposite the Claddagh (where Claddagh rings originated). Feed the biggest congregation of swans in Europe at The Swamp (opposite the claddagh). Walk up Medieval Quay Street, and check out Ti Neachtains and the original window where humanity dyck martin gave his speech on animal cruelty. Going up towards High Street you can stop off at Taaffes for some trad music - on up to the Four Corners and Lynches Castle (which is now a bank. and on up to Kennedy Park (Eyre Square), back down to Nora Barnacles house, over to the Galway Cathedral (used to be the jail), and the Salmon Weir Bridge - take the water walkways back over to Wolfe Tone Bridge which eill bring you back towards the Spanish Arch.

and thats just for starters ......

another lovely thing to do if you have a day, is to take a trip on the corrib princess - this brings you on a lovely boat ride throgh Lough Corrib - you can catch it at the Waterside in Woodquay. Its a lovely way to pass a couple of hours.

The thing about Galway is that there are very few if any 'must see' or 'must do' things ..... this may seem strange, but the secret to Galway is its atmosphere, not its landmarks.

There is no Trevi fountain, no Arc d'triomphe, no Piccadilly Circus, but what you will find is the maze of narrow streets, the medieval plaques on the shop fronts, the laid-back mutlinational community of residents, the hidden pubs, the disused but recently rejuvenated waterways....

To discover Galway you dont need a touring coach, nor a tourboat, nor a helicopter...you need a pair of legs, a camera and no schedule for a day...just immerse yourself in this city which is but a small town.

Wander down the 'main' street which is little wider than a laneway from Eyre Square to the Spanish Arch, cross the bridge and over the lock gates to the Claddagh, feed the swans, then take an energetci seaside walk for two miles along the seafront along irelnad's longest promenade, catch a glimpse of the Aran islands and the Burren across the bay, catch a bus from Salthill village back into town and wander around St Nicholas's protestant church where Columbus sat before contemplating sailing west across the Atlantic for the first time.

Then tuck into a hearty meal of fresh fish and chips at McDonagh's fish shop on Quay Street.

That's what a quick suggestion of what Galway is all about...
