Where to go Gaeltacht visit

The kids have got s get out of jail free card from The Gaeltacht on for the day;-)

Any suggestions on places to bring them and feed them on Sunday? Will be in Spiddal but happy to drive to Galway

Itself or anywhere else.

I had hoped for a beach picnic but with all the good weather they're looking for a change of scene.

Thanks a mill

Hi Dubfam,

Galway will be busy with all the fine weather we're having. Salthill will be mobbed. If I were you I'd go further out to Connemara. I'm not too sure what they'd like but these below are just some suggestions:

Roundstone and Clifden will be busy too but if you are doing the beach option you might like the Coral Strand outside Carraroe.

A day trip over to Inishbofin would be wonderful. It's promised more sunshine on Sunday. Days Beach Bar serve up the food.

A more expensive option would be the short scenic flight over the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran islands.

If you are doing the Killary Fjord Boat cruise do the 14.30 trip and drive over to Tully Cross for a bite to eat at Paddy's Coyne's Bar.I think it's 5 pm they start serving.

Thanks so much Damian. I'll play it by ear and see hiw things go.

If we were to stay relatively local (within a 30min drive) to Spiddal is there anywhere that would be good for Sunday lunch?

Dubfam,

Sorry, at the moment I can't find my crystal ball, though I do have a few tea leaves in the bottom of my cup.

btw, the cafe & Celtic crystal are super kid friendly.

Thanks everyone.

We had a lovely day yesterday. Decided to drive to Roundstone. Set off from Spiddal and took a tiny tiny road across the bog. The scenery was spectacular, there were sheep on the road and the smell was absolutely fabulous. What was that smell? Really really beautiful.

Needless to say the surroundings were totally unappreciated by the two phone starved teenagers in the back. Me - "Look at the beautiful mountains" - them "Ugh!" "There's no signal here!!". Me "look at the turf being cut" - them "ugh! Are we nearly there".

We arrived in Roundstone just as everyone was starting to feel a bit carsick after the bumpy twisty roads.

What a beautiful place. It was hopping. Spotted a few other bored looking teenage Gaeltacht escapees accompanied by their adoring parents. Lots of foreign visitors and plenty of Irish visitors too.

After a lovely walk around and down by the harbour we decided to eat in Vaughans Bar as it had Banoffee on the desert menu (kids calling the shots! Food was delicious - really fresh, good value and friendly service.

Had another walk around before heading back into the car and taking the n59 back to Galway this time. Much better road and the scenery was truly amazing. If I was on my own there would have been a million and one places I wanted to stop and look around . Could easily see someone spending a week or more in that area without running out of different things to do.

We'll be back next weekend so might get to follow up on more of the suggestions then.

LordK that pub looks great I spotted it on the way out to Spiddal and as it's right beside the beach it could be a great option for next weekend.

Thanks everyone for all the fantastic help - as they say - you guys are awesome ;-)!

Go raiibh maith agaibh.
