Connemara route

I am seeking opinions regarding the choice of routes for a short Connemara stay. I will be driving from Shannon to Clifden (N59)for a 2 day stay. I would like to tour the southwest portion as well as a more northern loop. For a day trip, which would be the route of choice; Clifden, Letterfrack, Renvyle, Tully Cross Kylemore and then turn on R344 toward Lough Inagh or travel toward Leeaun and travel R336 to Maam Cross. The southwestern segment would be from N59 and include Roundstone and Ballyconneely. I would appreciate your input.

Either of your routes would be lovely but as the Lough Inagh R344 road is one of our favourites (in fact it's probably our favourite road in the whole area as it runs between two stunning mountain ranges - the 12 Bens/Pins and the Maum Turks - and has bogland views and lakeside parts too and there is a nice place to stop midway for refreshments at the Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel) we'd personally opt for that route for your northern loop although there are other regular posters here on TA who love the alternative of the Leenane/Leenaun to Maam to Maam Cross loop. Either way, for the southern part of your loop do make sure that you take in picturesque Cashel Bay - the house opposite the pier is where we used to live! There are other nice country house hotel refreshment stops at the Zetland Country House Hotel, Cashel House Hotel and Ballynahinch Castle Hotel all on your way to Roundstone where the 'must do' place for a beverage/snacks is O'Dowd's right by the harbour :-)
