Day trips by train or bus

Hi,

We will be staying with our my kids (toddler and 10-year old) in Dublin for 5 days this summer. What short trips by bus or train would you recommend?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Nickadomi

I would suggest you take a few trips on the local train which runs along the Dublin coast, the DART.

Heading northward from Connolly Station you could visit both Howth and Malahide which are pretty villages that are nice to stroll around. Malahide has a lovely Marina, a Castle with a fantastic playground in its grounds and some lovely pubs, restaurants and shops.

Howth has a lovely harbour area where you can see the fishing boats coming and going, resident seals and for your little one, a little playground right in the centre of things. Howth also has some great pubs and restaurants. A take away fish and chips always tastes delicious there...must be the salty air!

If you head south on the DART you can go all the way to Bray in Co Wicklow, which is a typical seaside town and home to Sealife, which might be interesting for the kids.

Dun Laoghaire is also a lovely place to visit, you can walk along the pier and enjoy the fresh air. Whenever we visit we have to follow up the walk with a visit to Teddy's for ice-creams ;-)

What I would recommend is that any train journey you decide to take book them online in advance as TRAIN TRAVEL in Ireland is expensive. If you want to use the DART System a family ticket is about €15.00 for the day that will bring you out to Howth Or Malahide on the north side of Dublin or Bray Greystones on the South side all 4 are seaside towns.

Dublin Zoo is must for the kiddies. Its a short bus ride from the city centre.
