How to get to Sligo from Dublin Airport

We're planning to visit Ireland for a maximum of 2 weeks later this year. Me and my husband originally planned to stay for a week only around Dublin and the nearby areas. But we're thinking of extending our vacation and maybe go to Sligo as well and visit a relative.

We plan to stay in Sligo first and then move to Dublin after a few days. How do we go from the Dublin airport to Sligo? It is by train I believe. But isn't it going to be a hassle as we are going to carry our luggages around?

If I may ask also, is it worth going to Sligo? Well aside from the fact that we'll get to visit a relative, is there anything nice to see there? Any suggestions? Or should we just skip it?

I would recommend renting a car. You can get from Dublin airport to Sligo by bus. Otherwise you will have to get a bus to Huston Station and then get a train from Huston Station to sligo and then get a taxi from sligo train station to where ever you are going.

Outside of Dublin public transport really isnt any good. Sligo is a nice part of the country, could see it all in 3 days.

Just a correction there. Train from Dublin to Sligo departs from Connolly Station. Airline bus 747 takes you to Connolly Station.

A direct bus service operates from Dub airport to Sligo. It's a sparce service, obviously depending on your arrival time it may or may not suit. Bus Eireann operates this.

Another option is to fly to Sligo airport. I don't know the frequency or schedule, but I have friends who use this service.

Hope this helps. B

Hi Catmare

You have 2 options

You can take the Bus Eireann Bus directly from Dublin Airport to Sligo

Or alternatively take the bus to Connolly Station in Dublin City Centre and from there take the train to Sligo.

Sligo itself is a lovely county and there are lots of things to see and do. You can walk on beautiful rugged Atlantic beaches, hike up Knocknarea mountain, explore many beautiful forests such as Slish Wood and Dooney Wood. If you are interested in history a visit to Carramore Megalithic Cemetery is a must. At night there are fabulous pubs with lots of local live music and some lovely restaurants.

It's well worth a visit during your time in Ireland and having s friend there will make it even easier to see all the local places.

Hi Bikies You type faster!

The public flights to Sligo were sadly discontinued a few years ago. The airport is still open though for private flights and it also hosts the Coastguard rescue helicopter.

Thank you so much for all your response.

May I ask how long is the bus ride and the train ride from Dublin to Sligo? Our plane ride is gonna take about a day since we're coming from Asia, so it's gonna be a loooong flight. So we'd like a faster and easier trip if possible.

The bus takes about 3hrs 30 mins from Dublin Airport to Sligo.

If you take the bus into Connolly it will depend a lot on traffic but should be around 30mins or so and then the train takes about 3hours.

I suppose it really depends on which times suit your inbound flight best and which way you like to travel. Have a look at the timetables in the links I posted above to see which suits best. You'll probably sleep a lot of the way after such a long flight but both the train and the bus pass by some lovely scenery once you get outside of the main towns.

Both Sligo town and county have lots to offer in terms of things to do and places to see.

Ideas for drives within the county - north, south, east and west:

Thanks so much for your feedback. I am looking at the irishrail website and I'm wondering if I should purchase a ticket online.

Btw, since tohellor mentioned about public transportation outside Dublin isn't good. May I ask, how the public transpo in Cork, Limmerick, Galway, and Sligo is? Is it accessible? Can we take buses when we go sightseeing? Or can we purchase a tour package from the hotel we'll stay at or somewhere when we get there?

We originally just wanted to go to Sligo for a few days then the rest of our vacation we'll stay at Dublin and just take the Rail tours from the Dublin Bus. So we can see Cork, Limmerick, Killarney and Galway. I thought it would be easier. So we wouldn't have to worry about our transportation.

But now, we're thinking of flying of Manila to Cork, stay in a hotel. Do some sighteeing around the area for a few days. And then transfer to Killarney, stay in a hotel there and do some sightseeing. Then to Galway, to Sligo and lastly Dublin. Of course we plan to stay the most in Dublin. :)

What do you think? Shall we do the trip outside Dublin on our own or should we just go to Sligo to see our relative then back to Dublin and just take the rail tours from the Dublin Bus?

It's a bit confusing when you talk about 'rail tours by bus'. There are Day Tours by bus and totally separate Day (and longer) Tours by Rail Tours Ireland:

One of a number of Day Tour bus operators out of Dublin which offers Day Tours is Bus Eireann:

Irish Rail (Train Service):

By the way, the general consensus is that some of the Day Tours are extremely long days.

Dublin Bus is the bus service for the Greater Dublin area:
