About 2 hours 15 minutes - it's circa 125 miles. Rail timetables, fare information are on www.irishrail.ie.

book online and it is cheaper than buying the ticket at the station. Some trains require a change at Limerick junction but this is a very straightforward, cross-platform change.

How long does it take? It really depends on whether you are getting an intercity or one that goes via Ballybrophy and/or Limerick Junction.

Get an intercity if you can, its much easier. Domhnal has given you the website addy. It will tell you if the train you want is an intercity.

One more question - if we don't take an intercity would it be a more scenic route? We will be traveling from Shannon to Dublin by rental car but will leave the car in Dublin and spend a few days there. We want to take the train to return to the Shannon area the day before our flight home. So, we basically have a day to get back to Shannon. We didn't want to be on a train too long but a half day or so if it is through interesting places would be nice. Thanks again for the wonderful help. This site has been tremendously helpful in planning this vacation.

Your options are limited. Rail routes in Ireland generally radiate from Dublin - see route map on www.irishrail.ie/home/company_information.asp - and there is only a single mainline route from Dublin to Limerick , though there is a alternative for the last part of the route from Ballybrophy to Limerick via Nenagh. However, this is a very limited service - only once or twice daily. The normal mainline route is via Thurles and then either direct to Limerick or with a change of train at Limerick Junction.

Alternatively, you could travel to Galway and take a bus to Shannon but that might be too much hassle.

The landscape on the rail route between Dublin and Limerick is pleasant but not spectacular. Ditto between Dublin and Galway.
