Best stops between Dublin to Shannon

Hi all, my family will be driving from Dublin to Shannon, and I’m wondering if there are any small towns along the way to stop for lunch and a little walk with some interesting things to see. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You could stop at The Barack Obama Plaza (I kid you not!)

If you like fast food then J14 is for you, personally I'd travel one more junction to #15 and visit the Gandon Inn for better food in less frentic surroundings. From The Gandon it's a short spin into Portlaoise town for a stroll. Or continue to Nenagh at J26 for a view of another bustling Irish town.

IF you opt for the Gandon Inn, you should also consider visiting the Rock of Dunamase, which is VERY close by: https://goo.gl/maps/nU7f1TpWNqvAPNbBAf

Nenagh is an interesting place, but the traffic CAN be problematical. Another option might be Roscrea -- which hosts a castle, monastic ruins and a Round Tower.

Just realized that no one has yet asked -- Is this drive after some time spent IN Dublin -- and, hopefully, NOT immediately after an overnight flight? I certainly HOPE so -- for safety sake.

There are still sections of the M7 where there are reduced speeds due to construction work the last I knew that will likely add some time to your drive.

Portlaoise wouldn’t be my idea of a place for a stroll. It’s not a particularly nice town Centre . Stretch the legs at the aforementioned Rock of Dunamase or Emo Court .You could lunch in the lovely Abbeyleix either - some great food options there and a pretty heritage town to boot .

In an antique storehouse. Lots of weird things to look at for kids.
