Donegal or Letterkenny?

Planning to stay 2 nights in NW Ireland. Not sure which town to stay in.

WE want to see natural beauty of the area and hike or cycle. Letterkenny seems to have advantage of being closer to attractions in Derry area that could be done as day trip. What do you think? Also recommendations for places to stay are welcome. I will be checking B&B reviews area also. Thanks!!

It depends on the rest of your itinerary and how these days fit. Then what you hope to see and do. Donegal is a fairly large scenic county with the national park, mountains and lakes. Then you have some of the best coastline on the Island of Ireland from sandy beaches to the cliffs of the Slieve League.

If you are planning on including Derry then you really have to decide just what you want from County Donegal.

As to Accommodation it depends where you decide you want to be, what type of accommodation you want and how close to the centre of a town you want to be.

If you are interested in hiking and cycling have you looked at Ardara in Co. Donegal instead of Donrgal Town? It is closer to Slieve League, Glengesh Pass, many beaches, great pubs etc. In my opinion it is a more scenic area than either Letterkenny or Donegal Town.

It would help a great deal if we knew where you'll be travelling from, and also where you'll be driving onto after Donegal, as it's a large county, and 2 nights will only scrape the surface, especially if you're travelling some distance before or afterwards.

We spent a week on the west coast of Donegal near Bunbeg, and 4 nights on Inishowen Peninsula and were kept busy the whole duration with places to see, things to do. Didn't think Letterkenny was a particularly attractive town (sorry!!!), but really liked Rathmelton (about 14km north of Letterkenny) and Dunfanaghy on the north coast. If you're interested in horse-riding, then Dunfanaghy is a perfect spot, with riding available on the beach:

Dunfanaghy is a lovely town - I stayed there this past March.

I can also recommend Ardara.
