2 weeks in Ireland with 2 small kids - Where to go in North?

We're headed to Ireland in mid-May for two weeks with our almost 3 year old and an infant. We will be staying with family on either end of the trip (3 days in the beginning in Clifden and 3 days in the end in Longford area). Trying to plan the rest of our itinerary. Husband and I have been before and mostly have explored the south. Thinking of heading to the north this time around - any suggestions for sites/accommodations that are nice but family friendly?

Hi

Can you be a bit more specific on where you've covered? And are you specifically thinking Northern Ireland (maybe Donegal thrown into the possibilities?) With little ones so young and only 7/8 days to travel I don't think I'd be suggesting you do too much driving. Are you thinking of a week cottage rental type thing or covering a bit more of covering 2/3 towns/cities?

We've done Galway City, Dublin, Dingle, ring of Kerry, Cork city and stops in villages along the way. Have not done Cliffs of Mohr so may add that in as a day trip during our time in Co. Galway.

We very much want to see Giant's Causeway, explore Donegal area and Belfast. Ideally we'll find a house rental somewhere between so we can use as a base and do long day trips. Do you think that's best? Don't really want to move hotels every day, but if we have to, we can.

I would suggest Portstewart as a good base - although if your dates clash with race week (11-18th May - this is the international NW200 motorbike road race week and the circuit covers Portrush-Portstewart-Coleraine), then this probably wouldn't be the best place to stay.

This is the official tourist board accommodation finder link:

A couple of options close to the Causeway:

Portstewart is a quiet seaside resort with a couple of good play areas for children, rockpools, great beach (although mostly good for walks and building sandcastles unless you hit unusually warm weather). In nearby Portrush and Coleraine are other indoor safe play areas, a couple of fun farms within approx 20 minute drive, 20 minutes to the Causeway, one hour to Belfast (inland), less than an hour to Derry and if the Magilligan - Greencastle ferry is back on, easy to get to north Donegal (Inishowen).

It is quite a drive from Clifden though so you may want to take a night or two en route to break the journey for the little ones.

thank you, this is great info! Seems like Sligo would be about midway...have yet to do research on that area, but would that be a good overnight point or would you recommend elsewhere?

Yes - Sligo is as good as anywhere really unless you wanted to take a couple of days in south donegal (not sure if timeframe permits that)

The kids are maybe a little young but the other way would be to go Sligo-Enniskillen-Omagh-Derry-Coleraine-Portstewart. If you were interested in the Irish-American links, the Ulster American Folk Park at Omagh is very good for a few hours..
