Best route to tour Cliffs of Moher?

We are traveling to Ireland the first week of March. I know the weather might not cooperate but it is what it is.

Part of our itinerary includes two nights in Killarney followed by two nights in Galway and rounded out by a night in Ennis before our early morning flight. One of our must sees is Cliffs of Moher.

With the above itinerary when would be the best time to go? Personally, I was leaning towards doing it on our travel day from Killarney to Galway possibly taking the ferry in Tarbert.

We don't have any specific plans for Galway yet but this seemed like a good way to utilize or driving time and still leave plenty of time for other Galway activities our other days there.

Does this make sense or am I trying to cram in too much?

Your plan is good. Do it on the way to Galway.

Its a good plan provided the weather is good. If the weather is windy or misty or very wet give the Cliffs a miss.

If you are taking the ferry and you have a couple of hours to spare then the Flying Boat Museum in Foynes is very interesting http://www.flyingboatmuseum.com/

Sorry - just checked. The Flying Boat Museum is not open until the 15th March.

Killarney to Galway is best done using the main route as a non native, taking the ferry saves no time, in fact cost time because of the smaller roads. See the Cliffs and Burren on the way Back Down from Galway to Ennis on the far shorter drive. Head from Killarney via the Shannon tunnel maybe call at Bunratty before the motorway to Gort, Coole park is just North of Gort and might be worth a leg stretch.

I agree with Tony, and would do the Cliffs on the way back from Galway to Ennis.

I think the drive would be much more relaxing on the shorter route from Galway.

Stop off in Ballyvaughan or Lahinch for lunch and if it is a nice day be sure to go for a walk on the beach in Fanore.

Rather than create a new topic, I'll see if I can dredge up this one...

We have a couple of different options here and would like feedback. Based on the responses to this topic, we plan on taking the "direct" route to Galway. The Cliffs of Moher is my wife's #1 request to visit so it is a must.

Day 1: Arrive in Galway in Afternoon

Day 2: All day in Galway (staying second night in Galway)

Day 3: Leave Galway and head for Ennis

So which do you think we should do? Keeping in mind we don't mind driving...

Option 1:

Day 2 (Full day in Galway): The Burren and Cliffs of Moher

Day 3 (Leave for Ennis): Spend half day exploring Galway

Option 2:

Day 2 (Full day in Galway): Day trip to Connemara

Day 3 (Leave for Ennis): The Burren and Cliffs of Moher enroute to Ennis

Option 3:

Day 2 (Full day in Galway): Spend entire day exploring Galway

Day 3 (Leave for Ennis): The Burren and Cliffs of Moher enroute to Ennis

Which do you think is a reasonable option? I'd like to see Connemara but I realize this might be better saved for another trip. But is Galway worth an entire day of exploring? I am sort of leaning towards Option 1 but I wanted to get your advice.

Thanks!

You will have plenty of time to do the Burren and the Cliffs on your journey from Galway to Ennis, so I would go for option 2 or 3.

If you have the afternoon on day 1 free, that should be plenty of time to explore Galway. If you would really like to visit Connemara, then option 2 would be a good one for you.
