Seeing the countryside

We have 3 days to spend in the Irish countryside in July. We will be leaving Dublin and would like to work our way South, West, and North to Galway. Do you have suggestions about places to see and also the best way to travel? Is driving fairly easy? We were thinking of maybe hiring a guide/driver. Do trains serve you in this area? We like beautiful landscapes, hiking, visiting historic castles, as well as other spots of historic or natural interest. Thank you for your ideas.

Hiring a guide/driver would cost you an arm and a leg.

You can easily get to Galway by train from Heuston Station in Dublin. The train journey will take you right through Ireland. From Galway (a really lovely place) you can take daytours to the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Island, Connemara... These will, of course, restrict your ability to ramble at leisure but it would give you some experience of Ireland.

Otherwise you should rent a car (possibly quite expensive or the few days but cheaper than a personal guide/driver. Then you could visit all the places that interest you.

And yes, driving in Ireland is easy enough. Thousands of tourists do it every year. Hubby and I drove a car through and around LA, we thought it was terrifying but we did it, so you can drive a car in Ireland!

If you rented a car you could also consider making Kilkenny your base, it's only about 80 km from Dublin and you would have the choice of really lovely countryside, walks along rivers or in woodland, antiquities and pretty villages.
