Best way to get around Ireland?

I've been advised that because I'm 23 (turning 24) that renting a car for the duration of my trip is going to be very costly, which is unfortunate that would've been my top choice for getting around Ireland as I'm very independent and like taking my time to stop and see things for myself, so looking for alternatives to getting around. Any suggestions??

Buses are the backbone of Ireland’s public transport, with both private operators and the government owned Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus. Trains are great for a lot of journeys from Dublin and some specific trips outside Dublin (e.g. Cork-Killarney or Limerick-Galway). Neither get you out into the wild, so hiking or cycling can be an important add on to a trip without a car.

It all depends where you want to go. Buses will take you to a lot of places, and you can fill in the gaps with taxi's.

Lise; If you have not yet read Samantha and WhatTheHell1, do so. Based on my very brief, two evening/overnight stays in Galway, I would consider it a must do for you young solo folks and these two nailed it.

Actually, I consider Galway a must see for any age and if all you do is Galway and Inishmore, you will go home happy.
