What to See with 4 Days in Ireland?

My husband and I will be in Dublin for a work trip in September. We're planning on going to someplace else in Ireland for 4 days after the conference (leave Dublin on a Wednesday afternoon, and fly out of either Shannon or Dublin to the US Sunday). We could use help deciding where to go. We can either rent a car or do public transit. We'd like to see the "real" Ireland - scenic landscapes, charming towns, pubs, etc. We don't necessarily want to be in a big city since we'll spend the first part of our trip in Dublin.

Where would you recommend we go? I've looked at Galway, Cork, and Kinsale. Trying to figure out which we'll be happiest with.

Thanks for any input you can give me!

I can't say for sure which choice you will be happiest with. Galway City or Clifden in the heart of Connemara are two suggestions. Galway City has a great vibe and a lively pub scene with trad music. You would also be in close proximity to the scenic areas in Connemara. If you would prefer staying in a smaller town then Clifden might fit the bill. Clifden does have a fair number of restaurants and pubs.

By public transport go with either Galway or Killarney. They are easy to get to and easy to tour from. Cork could be an option, but if you’ve been in Dublin it may seem like too much of the same city vibe.

By car, the entire island is accessible. For less touristy, Sligo or Bantry could be good. Neither are exceptionally touristy, but give great access to stunning areas.

I'd head for County Kerry myself.

Breathtaking scenery and lots of smaller villages to explore.

You could base yourself in Killarney and explore from there.

For 4 days with a car - Sligo Town

Spend your first evening (Wed) exploring the town & sights nearby such as Strandhill, Knocknarea, Carrowmore,

Thursday - Hazelwood, Parkes Castle, Lissadell House, Glencar waterfall, Drumcliffe Church & W.B Yeats grave etc

Friday - Take a drive to South/Southwest County Donegal stopping off at Mullaghmore or Rossnowlagh or both, Donegal Town & Castle, Slieve League, Glencolmcille & if time permits back to Sligo via Glengesh & Ardara

Saturday - Byebye Sligo & head to Galway for the night taking a detour to Boyle on the way for Boyle Abbey, King House & Lough Key Forest Park, explore & enjoy Galway city for the afternoon & evening

Sunday fly home from Shannon
