Getting to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh

We'll be in Scotland in April to visit our daughter at the University of St. Andrews, and we'd like to spend a couple of days on the Isle of Skye beforehand. We were hoping to take a train from Edinburgh via Inverness, but it looks as if we can't do that in one day, at least on a Sunday. Will we need to rent a car to make this trip, or can we do it by public transportation without spending two days?

Hi YankeeMama!

You could take the train to Inverness and then hire a car from there - then you are just looking at a 2 hour drive across to the Skye Bridge. This would certainly give you a lot more flexibility for seeing both Skye and the Lochalsh area while you're up here! The road across from Inverness is quiet, although you will have to deal with single track driving in places, but honestly, please don't let that put you off!

If you hire a car from Edinburgh you are looking at approx. 5 hours driving time (+ stops!) - the journey is gorgeous scenery-wise, but the roads will be quite hectic until you pass Perth or Stirling (depending on which route you take!) - then it will simply get quieter the further north & west you get!

Hope this helps - oh, and you'll have a great time in St. Andrews!

Thank you, YorkieLass! Since we're planning to arrive on a Sunday, it looks like renting a car would give us a lot more flexibility.

And thanks for the other information you've posted recently about Skye. It's all been very helpful as we plan our trip. I hope we'll have time to get there, as I visited briefly in 1973 and always wanted to go back.

I agree with Yorkielass that hiring a car from St Andrews and driving to Skye is the best option. Gettin the train from St Andrews is not the easiest option as you will have to connect from there to other places first. (Dundee, Perth or Kirkcaldy perhaps) before getting to Inverness. You can take the train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. This is a lovely (slow!) journey on the small train. It is possible to hire a car locally in Kyle and drive over the bridge to Skye. You can also hire fromn most large hire care companies in Inverness.

The drive from St Andrews should take you back to the main A9 route. You should leave this road at Dalwhinnie and go across country, by Loch Laggan to Spean Bridge. From there you take the road north west to Kyle of Lochalsh via Invergary, Loch Cluanie and Glenshiel, and cross the bridge to Skye. It is a spectacular drive.

Have a good journey!

Shoreside.
