Itinerary that includes Islay

We're planning a 7 day trip to Scotland in June and are thinking of stopping in Islay to visit the Laphroaig and Lagavulin distilleries. How long to set aside for Islay? We'd also like to spend some time outdoors during our stay in Scotland; fishing, hiking, maybe kayking. Where to from Islay? We're renting a car and don't want to drive more than 3 hours in any one day.

You could do worse than base yourself on Islay for the week. There's hiking and fishing right there, and on the neighbouring island of Jura. There are also several more distilleries. And on Wednesdays it's easy to make a day trip to the smaller and lovely island of Colonsay. See www.calmac.co.uk for ferries. You could also fly direct to Islay from Glasgow, and pick up a hire car there. This saves a long-ish drive, with high fuel costs and expensive car ferries.

Thanks for the info -- we're very excited about our visit. 15 years married and the kids are staying home! Our 'package' has us landing in Edniburg and picking up a car there. Other than the long drive, fuel and ferries -- what should we expect on our drive to Islay? Is it realistic to see the Highlands after visiting Islay, or should we save for the next trip?

I wouldn't recommend trying to cover the Highlands as well - indeed, your 3-hour driving limit would make that difficult anyway. However, there are various possible routes that might just give you a taste of Highland scenery. But I need to know what day of the week you leave Edinburgh.

It's less than a full week, and your 3-hour driving limit makes it quite a challenge! But one option might be:

Monday: depart Edinburgh for Glencoe. Stay two nights. Tuesday hike Glencoe. Wednesday short drive to Oban, afternoon ferry to Islay. Stay three nights. At some point here, a side trip to Jura is recommended - great hiking and a distillery. Saturday take ferry to Kennacraig, drive back Edinburgh via Inveraray and Loch Lomond.
