Need train info Pitlochry - Edinburgh, vise versa

Have never been to Scotland and are planning a trip in June 2010. We are four ladies ranging in age from mid 50s to young 80s. Plans: Sightseeing at our own pace.

1. Fly into Edinburgh

2. Rent car, drive to Pitlochry

3. Renting a cottage in Pitlochry for at least a seven day week. Sat to Sat rental.

Wondering if it would be better to then to return to Edinburgh and spend 3 - 4 nights in hotel for city sightseeing or stay in Pitlochry another week and commute daily by train. Want to rent car for only one week.

All recommendations gladly appreciated.

It's about 2 hours by train from Pitlochry to Edinburgh so better to have your 3-4 nights staying in the city.

A car is not needed in Edinburgh as parking is difficult and taxis and buses are easy to use.

Hi there TCK

Suggest returning to Edinburgh to stay and maybe renting an apartment.?This will give you more space, privacy and comfort than a hotel(in my opinion) We ( a group of 5 friends in our 50s/60s) do this at least once a year and have a great time. You will not need a car in Edinburgh, in fact its a hindrance. Taxis are not expensive when divided between a group and the bus service is reliable and clean (and safe) You will need your 3 to 4 nights to see all the city has to offer. Edinburgh is amazing.

Have a ball!
