Day in Orkney on Cruise Ship

I am visiting Kirkwall in July on a Cruise Ship. Any suggestions what to do, should be book a trip from the ship or just spend the day in Kirkwall.

Hi Scottishgran,

It will help people if you can let them know how long you will have in Kirkwall.

2hours?

8hours?

Having had three separate days in Kirkwall, all off cruise ships, I will say that cruise excursions are expensive and a rip off, we arranged car hire in advance and had a car for the whole day for two of us at a fraction of the price of the cruise excursions, went where we liked and stopped where we liked.

Having said that, if you have a short day, there is quite a bit to see in Kirkwall.

Cant remember the name of the garage, just google car hire orkney.

They met us at the ship and at the end of the day we left the car on the dock with the keys in it, what bliss to live on an island.

Worth looking at what a tour guide can offer you as there is so much more to see than just Kirkwall. Try Orkney Uncovered for ideas on what a tour can offer.

Thank you all for the suggestions. The car hire sounds like a good idea, will look into that. Can't remember how long we have in Kirkwall. Will check up and get back.

Does anyone know distances to the Italian Chapel and any other tourist attractions from Kirkwall. I looked up hiring a car and it seems reasonable.

The Italian Chapel is about a 15/20 minute drive from Kirkwall and without question you will come up with a great itinerary for a day trip with a car including all the main attractions as well as a couple of others off the beaten track ;-)
