Edinburgh/Inverness/Fort William

Hi, My children are planning a trip for their dad's 60th on a train from Edinburgh to Inverness. Dad would like to do the Jacobean from Fort William -is it? to-Mallaig.

We will be coming from Manchester way- what would be the best order for the trip. I wold be so grateful for help planning this! Thank you

They are 2 separate lines, except in summer when you CAN travel from Edinburgh to Fort William and on to Mallaig.

Otherwise the normal starting point is Glasgow Queen St. station.

Why not start in Glasgow; go to Fort William; get the Jacobean to Malliag; ferry to Skye (Armadale); bus or taxi to Kyle of Lochalsh; train to Inverness; train to Edinburgh?

Takes about 3 days. And you travel on 3 of the most scenic lines in the world!

Manchester is already West of the Penines, so I agree with Peterscot: Manchester - Glasgow - Fort William - Mallaig makes sense, followed by the ferry to SKye, and later Kyle - Inverness - Edinburgh. And if you can manage it, spend a day or two ON Skye. Lots to do there.

As a shorter option, you could go by train to Fort William, stay the night, do a return day trip to Mallaig on the Jacobite next day, and then go on by Citylink coach from Fort William to Inverness, and then by train to Edinburgh.

How is the party planning to travel to Edinburgh or Glasgow?
