Jacobite steam train -Is this a worth while trip?

Is this a 'must' thing to do? I don't know anything about Harry Potter, which is my understanding why a lot of people take this train. Is taking the Jacobite train worth it taking or can I get the same satisfaction from seeing the scenery while driving around from Edinburgh - Inverness - Fort William, Stirling, etc?

I don't want to spend the time or money if it really doesn't add anything extra to my trip.

Thanks in advance.

Is this a 'must' thing to do? NO

I don't know anything about Harry Potter, which is my understanding why a lot of people take this train. (NEITHER DO I. WHO IS HARRY POTTER?)

Is taking the Jacobite train worth it (YES. ONE OF THE MOST SCENIC TRAIN JOURNEYS IN THE WORLD. ALTHOUGH the JACOBITE IS A SPECIAL STEAM TRAIN.).

can I get the same satisfaction from seeing the scenery while driving around from Edinburgh - Inverness - Fort William, Stirling, etc POSSIBLY.

You need to do more research and decide what is important to you. We don't know what floats your boat.

There are no 'must dos'

The train journey was there and enjoyed by thousands long before anybody had heard of Harry Potter

The road follows the railway so if you want to see the area and don't choose to take the train you can see the same scenery

Of course its not a 'must do' rail journey and was already famous before Harry Potter appeared on the scene.

I first took the west highland line in June 1998, to meet up with family and friends in Arisaig, just south of Mallaig. Its a STUNNING train journey from Glasgow.

Frequently talked of as 'one of the best' in the world... and at least in my opinion the nicest in the UK...

No doubt you will still really enjoy the scenery from the car, but the routes are not identical. I like both - car for stopping at one's leisure - train for me edges it in terms of the scenery.

You can see the same scenery from the normal service train at much less cost

Whether it's worth while is essentially a factor of your own personal values, not something external.

Postscript: There are some people who are into steam trains; so the choice is automatic. There are 'Harry Potter' fans; the same applies.

Once you are on the train you will be looking OUT at the view and that's the same view from any train. You have a choice of rolling stock: old fashioned or modern utilitarian. You have a choice over frequency of service, price, and number of stopping places. Sorry if that's a bit 'Spock from Startreck'.

I think the best way of doing it is by car, stopping at the NTS carpark at Glenfinnan, and getting into a position (there's a path) where you can take pictures of the 'Jacobite' as it approaches and crosses the viaduct. But that's not what you were asking.
