Excursion from Inverness for The Jacobite Train Journey

We are hoping to visit Scotland next year and I am in the process of looking at where to visit while we are there. We have decided on Inverness as a starting point as we want to visit Loch Ness etc. My husband really wants to go on the Fort William to Mallaig train journey. Does anyone know of any excursions from Inverness? We are flexible with our plans so could stay at the end of the journey. If we can't find a guided tour that covers the train journey we might just hire a car and do our own thing. Any suggestions please?

It depends on if you are 'into' steam trains. There are few places in the UK where you can go on a long steam train journey on a 'main'railway line as opposed to a short preserved railway where the speed limit will be 25 mph.

To see and hear a steam loco working hard over a long trip is not something easy to find unless you book on main line steam charter train which will cost considerably more than the Jacobite.

If you have no interest in steam trains ,then obviously it makes sense to go on the normal diesel railcar train.
