Money handling

Traveling to Scotland this summer and will spend quite a bit of time in the Highlands. What's the best way to carry money - Cash plus credit card? Should I exchange money once I get there? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Most people use ATMs to get cash & credit cards to pay for goods (but generally not for low price items). Check your bank / card company for what fees THEY will charge, tell them you want to know this because you are going abroad and have the overseas contact numbers to hand when they can't work out that talking about foreign transactions and asking about foreign transaction charges means you are going abroad

Also have a 4 digit PIN - ie four numbers and not the first 4 letters of your dog's name - as UK ATMs only have numbers on them

And if you sign your cards "check id" either change your name to "check id" or use a real signature

Great advice and thanks for the quick response!

PS: Any advise for traveling throughout Scotland and especially the Highlands? We're backpacking and staying in hostels. Thanks, again!

Hi

Back packing! You will have fun!

E mail the tourist board in Aviemore, they will have plenty of advice!

Good back packers place in Aviemore next to the Old Bridge inn Pub if i remember right.

Have fun!

Take local midgie repellant - you may find in certain areas(especially west coast) that the midgies are fierce - its best to buy what works locally - here in Grantown on Spey for example the local gamekeepers recommend Avon Skin so Soft which can be bought in fishing and camping stores.
