short break in Aviemore Dec 2010

We are thinking of coming to Aviemore for a few days between Christmas and New Year this year.

Can anyone advise on whether there is likely to be snow? and any recommendations on things to do/ places to eat etc.

"Can anyone advise on whether there is likely to be snow?"

No-one can advise that as no-one has a clue as to what the weather is doing tomorrow let alone a month's time.

There may be snow, there may not be snow, there may be snow but conditions are so dangerous that staying in front of the fire is the best idea

A good site for keeping your eye on the weather in the area is http://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/ the skiing season has started already and even earlier than last year, though as Alan says it is impossable to pedict too far in advance. The Aviemore area is great though and very busy during Xmas and New Year :-)

We have had a wee dusting of snow today and there was quite a bit of snow at Cairngorm Mountain last weekend - enough for winter sports. However it is impossible to predict the weather. I will say that whatever the weather there is loads to do in the area if you like the great outdoors. If not just find a cosy seat beside a fire and enjoy the atmosphere.

Places to eat? Loads in Aviemore Village - my favourites are The Old Bridge Inn on the outskirts of town,

Mountain Cafe in the main street and La Taverna, an Italian bistro near the roundabout at the south end of the village. The Cairngorm Hotel in the main street is brillaint value and has good food and a friendly service.

Things to do - walking? Masses of beautiful scenic tracks.

what about a Sleddog trip? - if there is snow its even better

the Reindeer Centre

Go up the mountain in the Funicular Railway

Strathspey Steam train from Aviemore to Boat of Garten

Mountain biking - loads of beautiful (flat) cycling trails. Rothiemurchus do bike hire

The area is busy over the Festive Season so book as soon as you can for somewhere to stay if you have not done so already.
