The answer to your first question is that no-one knows. It could be anything from 0C to 20C, totally calm, blowing a gale, heavy rain, low cloud, clear skies, strong sunshine - and all of them could be on the same day. You might even get snow.

About the only near certainty (though not guaranteed) is that it will be worse in the Cairngorms

As for snow - yes there's snow in the Cairngorms, whether it will be there in a month's time is anyone's guess

I live in Aviemore and just to add a bit to the above (correct!) information - in general (very general) May is a more stable month weatherwise here but you should come prepared for anything. WRT snow, after the amazing winter we have had there will still be patches of snow on the Cairngorm Plateau but not much elsewhere and probably the official skiing will have ended by then. You can travel up on the funicular railway but you can't exit from the top station so if you want to be on the snow your best bet would be to walk up (for which you will need all the appropriate walking gear)

Don't miss Loch An Eilean southeast of Aviemore. A Loch with a castle ruine on an Island. Very charming. You can walk around the loch within about 1 hour. Wonderful, quiet and scenic walk. Have a look:

P.S.: I had no snow, when I was there on April 10th 2010.

British weather is unpredictable at the best of times, but you should always be prepared for wind and wet, especially at altitude when conditions can change suddenly and bad weather can be dangerous.
