Best Fish and Chip Shops in Scotland - Sauce or vinegar?

Check out the list:

I can personally vouch for the Anstruther chippie and I've walked past the Deep Sea chippie in Dundee a few times and it certainly looked good.

Have you been to any on the list, or do you think you know somewhere better to sample our national dish?

Had a good one from the Pittenweem chippy 2 weeks ago. Very reasonable price too.

I personally love the fish and chips at Anstruther. A land locked yank like me loves to take my food outside and watch the boats as I eat.

Yeh, I guess we Brits really take the sea for granted - its a super wee spot isn't it?

Looking at the list - it is clear the valuable input to the Scottish diet by the immigrant Italians over the years.

Had a look at the Scotsman article PurpleCeltic and take exception to the quote about 'Edinburgh Upstarts' coz we take salt & sauce!

Mmmm I'm starving now and the banana just isn't hitting the spot!

I see on that Scotsman page a link to an even longer list of chippies in scotland - 600 plus!

The whole salt and vinegar vs salt and sauce debate is a bit over the top of my head as I'd never heard of salt and sauce until recently and don't know what it tastes like. Its obviously an Edinburgh speciality - is it a bit like HP sauce? Do Edinburgh chippies not have vinegar?

I'm quite open to giving it a try, but there is always so much choice of great food in Edinburgh that I've not got around to it yet.

PC

It's a bit like watered down HP sauce so it is quite sharp and I have loved 'broon sauce' ever since and far prefer it to tomato sauce and I'm not that fond of vinegar. Fish and chips out of a chippy are a rare treat these days of my ever expanding waistline! As for deep fried mars bars - don't even go there! I have also seen DF Snickers basr and Jaffa cakes on offer...I can hear my arteries hardening just typing this!

In these days of healthier eating, or being told we should, has anyone tried deep fried orange or apple segments?

Would that be wrapped in batter?

purple,

I was thinking maybe a light breadcrumb covering, rather than batter. But maybe a bag of both?

now all I have to do is decide whether to drown that in maple syrup or golden syrup?
