Walking the Old Course

My fiancée and I will be in Edinburgh next week, and we plan on visiting St. Andrews one day. I'd love to see the British Golf Museum, maybe buy a souvenir in the pro shop, and hopefully walk up the 18th fairway a la Nicklaus, Jones, and Old Tom.

Is there a best day of the week to do this? I've heard the course is open to the public on Sundays -- is that true? And if it is, is the golf museum and the pro shop open on Sunday? Thanks very much.
