Mailing the scotch bottles to US

Hello!

I wanted to seek an advice on if I could mail myself the scotch whisky I purchase on my trip.

I understand I can buy after security at heathrow and all of that but I am going on a three day trip to Spey and looking forward to purchasing a few bottle. I get back from the trip on a Friday then leaving Sunday. Is UPS available? Would my hotel be able to help me with this?

I've had wine bottles stolen from my checked-in luggage and am trying to avoid putting expensive whisky in my checked in luggage.

Please advise! :) Thank you!

P.S: a bottle of 12 year Glenlivet goes for around 40 USD... how much is it in Scotland?

A bottle (700ml) of The Glenlivet 12 is £23.80 at ASDA, or £28.95 from specialist retailer Whisky Shop Dufftown (http://www.whiskyshopdufftown.co.uk).

Unfortunately shipping whisky to the US is a bit difficult at the time. The CAA has banned whisky (and other strong alcoholic beverages) from being shipped as cargo on passenger planes. So few British retailers will ship whisky to the US due to this and US customs rules. You need to check with the different shipping firms if they'll accept shipping whisky.

If the shipping rates at The Whisky Exchange (one of the few who will ship to the US) is anything to go by it's £32 for a single bottle and then £10 for each next bottle.

Note there are thousands of whiskies available in Scotland that aren't available in the US. If The Glenlivet is your favourite they've got a 17yo Cask Strength edition available from their visitor centres.

£24 is around £37 USD. Postage will be at least £10 plus you will need to pack it very well so that will also cost you. Go to your local store and buy it in the US. It might not even get there in one piece if you post it.

Oh and if you are sending more than one bottle US customs will likely want their piece of silver duty before you get your whisky

Just looking at the Whisky Exchange delivery charges to the USA which are £32 for one bottle making a total of

£53.21. That's even after taking off 21% VAT and if your order is under £125 then no customs charges are added.

I didnt realise that the shipping costs would be more than the cost of the bottle!

Buy a couple of bottles at the Distillery, sometimes they are packaged in tins /boxes which would be a plus.

Then wrap /roll them securely in say sweaters in your checked luggage, especially if it is hard sided/ rigid luggage and you will be fine.

I have done that regularly and never had breakage or theft.

Thank you everyone!

I think I'll plan on buying some at duty free and maybe two at most during my distillery trip. I feel like rolling the dice a little :)

Has anyone been to a distillery tour in Spey by the way? Any watch outs? And is there anything I should buy that isn't Scotch in Spey?

It's a set tour and I'm not sure if we'll be going there but I'll look out for it! Did you like Speyside?

We did. It included access to both the Highlands and the coast. Great green countryside and also close to many castles.
