Edinburgh to Stirling

My mom and I will be in Edinburgh the week of March 10 2013 and want to take a trip to Stirling as well as Melrose Abbey. Our group has a morning jaunt over to Edinburgh Castle, so are we better off taking the train from Royal Mile or hiring a driver?

1. Re: Edinburgh to Stirling

The easy one is Stirling, there are frequent trains from Edinburgh Waverley Station to Stirling Station. Journey time is just under an hour. Stirling Castle is about 1km from the station and is as you would expect for a Castle an uphill walk.

There are regular buses from Edinburgh Bus Station to Melrose https:/…edinburghpsat.php If it is only Melrose you want to see then the bus might be OK for you as there is no train service in that area. However having said that you will probably want to see Abbotsford House and Melrose Abbey which are about 5km apart, a short distance in a car but difficult by public transport as a visitor. If that is the case then having a car or a driver might make more sense.

If you look up Timberbush Tours, they do a day trip to Melrose Abbey which includes Rosslyn Chapel and Glenkinchie whisky distillery.

Timberbush and Rabbies do similar tours north-westwards including Stirling and the Trossachs.

In case you prefer to be taken rather than make your own way.
