Edinburgh instead of London?

Hello everyone,

I am hoping to visit Edinburgh early next year with my Mum - we usually go to London at this time but we have been for many consecutive years and I have never been to Edinburgh so we thought we might give it a go.

The castle is obviously a must but is there any other must sees? We are interested in all the sites and would be there for probably two or three days.

We don't really like to spend the evenings in pubs so in London we would normally do a ghost walk in the evening, is there something similar to do in Edinburgh?

One last thing - we would like to stay somewhere fairly close to the Train Station (which I believe is central) so can anyone suggest a nice hotel or b&b for around £100 per night.

All your help and comments will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Amy

If you organise yourself and go during Edinburgh Festival time, then there will be plenty going on.

Edinburgh has a very very good Art Gallery.

You can go on a little side trip to see the Royal Yacht Brittania and also admire the Forth Bridges.

Holyrood Palace, Arthurs Seat, Princes Street and The Royal Mile are all famous 'places' and the Scott Monument is worth a 'look'.

Yes, Plenty to do in Edinburgh, you will not be disappointed!

The festival is not on till August,so a bit of a wait. There is plenty for you to do in the early part of the year. There are several hotels round about Waverley Station covering all budgets.

Edinburgh is a very compact city,so is fairly easy to get around.

You will find several Ghost tours on offer from the Royal Mile, and the Castle and Holyrood Palace all within walking distance of each other.

You will find plenty to do to cover all tastes.I hope you enjoy your stay here, just wrap up well!

Try The Apex on Waterloo place which is to the E of the station. Probably about right for your budget. Many on Princes Street are more expensive.

Edinburgh has LOADS of galleries, not just one, if that takes your fancy. e.g. John Bellany retrospective until 27 January. Too early? Peploe at the Gallery of Modern art until June. Plus free general exhibitions at both plus the portrait gallery. And 2 somewhat smaller galleries on Market Street at the back of the station. And a shedload more private galleries.

It also has concerts, theatre, dance. You don't need to wait for the Festival for any of these.

The Museum is a good call - good for kids of all ages.

Some ghost tours are better than others. The ones selling their wares on the high street are sometimes suspect. Best choose one that's bookable even if you don't book in advance. For some real ghostly history look up the real Mary King's close. Boarded off because of plague; subsequently built over; then rediscovered. There are kirkyard tours of famous names.

There is lots to see and do in Edinburgh. In addition to the Castle, don't miss the Museum of Scotland. It's quite good. There are several other museums on The Royal Mile. I really like Gladstone's Land. Do get over to New Town. I really like The Georgian House.

BTW you can tour Holyrood. It's an interesting tour and you get information on the building and the Scottish Parliament.

A great day tour is Stirling Castle. You can take the train to Stirling and then walk up or take a bus to the Castle. It's wonderful. The Renaissance Palace was just restored and opened within the last year or so.

There are some lovely restaurants in Edinburgh too, so you don't have to eat in the pubs. The seafood is really excellent.

The Apex Waterloo Place is very close to the station and you might get lucky and bag a pay-in-advance rate from their website within your budget. You certainly won't during August! You're more likely to be on budget with a stay at Jurys which is also pretty cloet but on the Old Town side of Waverley station. Apex is on the New Town side.

Edinburgh is very walkable in terms of its compact size, however be prepared for steep hills and steps, and cobbled streets. If you don't know that there are many excellent ghost walks on offer in edinburgh, then you haven't looked at the Things to Do link for Edinburgh. You really should take a look.

There is so much to do in and around Edinburgh. To explore it at its best for the first time, I highly recommend you avoid August when the streets are a heaving mass of people, and the hotels hike their rates to eye-watering prices.

You'll love Edinburgh!

Hi Daniela. You have 2 posts, both recommending the same rental agency. Do you have a connection to it?
