Drive to Loch Lomond from Edinburgh

Sorry to ask another question......

Having looked at organised day trips from Edinburgh, we've decided to drive to Loch Lomond under our own steam.

Can anyone help with a nice scenic route - I see we'll probably need to go via Stirling but don't necessarily want to stop there.

Thanks again

You don’t have to go via Stirling, you could do a loop, via Glasgow and back via Stirling.

Or in reverse!

If you are staying in Edinburgh and drive to Loch Lomond and then return in your car, remember you need to find accommodation that has parkng, Parking is a nightmare in Edinburgh.

Drive past Stirling to Callander, then through the Trossachs to Aberfoyle (possibly visiting Loch Katrine), then go via Gartmore across to Drymen.

If want to really want to get of the beaten track, at the big roundabout outside Stirling, come off the M9 and head towards Carron Bridge, either cross country (single track roads) or via Denny, and follow the B818 though the Carron Valley and Fintry.

As above, you can of course take different routes out and back.

Don't do Carron route if at all icy. After Carron Dam the road is not gritted. Also large pot holes which fill with water so hard to tell depth of them can damage car if hit at speed.

Oh indeed, I'd only suggest it for decent weather, maybe not in today's -6C. Don't want anyone experiencing the reservoir at too close quarters. I wouldn't go round the Trossachs in such weather either. It would be much better to take the M8 through Glasgow in that case.

(I did drive across to Fintry in the snow once. Hadn't quite taken into account how much more snow there would be up the hill. It was ... interesting.)

There are Hotels in Edinburgh with parking. One is, I believe a budget hotel.

There are also free park and ride options as an alternative to taking a car into the city, as well as parking outside any charging areas on the street.
