Gretna Green Vow Renewal

My husband and I would like to come from the United States to Gretna Green to renew our vows in May 2013. I see that there are basic packages available, but am not sure as to the logistics for travel to and from the village. What is the closest airport? What is the easiest way to get from the airport to the village? What hotels can you recommend? Suggestions for other things to do in the area (we like shopping, history and hiking)? As a side note, I've got family ties in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire and would possibly like to try to visit that village. We're on a budget and need to know approximately how much this trip will cost. Thanks so much!

Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow are the three closest airports.

Glasgow would be the one to aim for if you want to visit Kilmacolm as well.

By public transport you can take the airport coach into Glasgow and then a train from Glasgow Central Station direct to Gretna Green (departs ca. every 2 hours). Train is £14.50 one way and the Glasgow Shuttle from the airport is £5 (one way) or £7.50 (open return).

The neighbouring Gretna has a Outlet Center (http://www.gretnagateway.com/).

From Glasgow there's a direct bus (service X7) to Kilmacolm. Don't know the price, but it can't be much for such a short distance.

B&B's are available in Gretna Green from £60 (double) and reviews are found via the link on the the top left of this page.

You might want to check out hire car costs as Dumfries and Galloway is quite spread out and that way you would be able to see lots. History in the area- Caerlaverock Castle and Drumlanrig Castle would be good to visit. Also Shambellie House, Wanlockhead Lead mining museum, and Samye Ling Tibetan Cente are good. There are lots of Robert Burns related places to visit. For shopping- Castle Douglas is a lovely market town and Moffat has lots of good little shops. Hiking-lots of walking opportunities- Criffel is a good climb and has lovely views over the Solway, Grey Mares Tail is a good hike as is the Annandale Way- Gretna to Moffat.

Hope this provides you with a little info on our lovely area.

For what it's worth, Manchester Airport is approx 2hrs 17 mins from Gretna, Glasgow is 1 hrs 34 mins, Edinburgh is 1 hrs 51 mins and Newcastle is 1 hrs 28 ins.
