Visit to University of Glascow, Dumfries campus

Hi

Just wondering which Scottish airport is best to fly into for this visit and whether hiring a car is necessary or is there good public transport.

Thanking you in advance.

(Oops! Sorry for misspelling Glasgow above)

Dumfries is about 80 miles south of Glasgow.

If you fly into Glasgow Airport you can get the airport bus into the city.

Stagecoach has buses from Buchanan Bus Station to Dumfries.

Scotrail has trains from Central Station.

You can also fly Ryanair to Prestwick. Take the train to Kilmarnock and change there for a train to Dumfries

From Glasgow Airport you can also take the bus to Central Station and there's a direct train service every hour to Dumfries.

To be honest I would rent a car if possible if you are only on a short one day visit. From PIK it's quite a nice drive

Thanks for the replies, decided to fly into Prestwick (flights worked out a lot cheaper). Looking at car hire, but it seems expensive, if you have any pointers there I'd appreciate it. Also, RonaldoC, you mention that it's a nice drive, is there anything along the way or around the Dumfries area you would recommend checking out?

If you use the train Prestwick Airport/Kilmarnock/Dumfries you are entitled to 50pc discount on fare if you show a copy of the air booking to the train conductor.

See Prestwick Airport website for details but note that there are not that many trains on this route.See Scotrail site for timings.

This site will trawl all the car rental sites for you. Just a quick search next month gives a small car from around 20GBP (you have to select Glasgow as the location the PIK comes up).

You can take the long way around the coast. Can't think of anywhere in particular at the moemnt but it's generally nice countryside. I used to drive down that area a lot for work but it's been a while so my memory is a little fuzzy. I seem to remeber Portpatrick being nice but that will take you quite out of your way

Hi rayman4, not clear when you're visiting Dumfries however if you haven't travelled yet it's likely that from Prestwick you should drive across country on the A70 & A76. Some of this is former mining country and can look a bit bleak however the nearer to Dumfries you get the more rural it becomes. Depending upon your interests and time available, en route you could fit in a visit to Dumfries House, near Cumnock (interesting stately home with largest collection of Chippendale furnishings) or take a diversion up to Wanlockhead Mining Museum (after Sanquhar). You would need to check opening times especially at this time of year - and for snow at Wanlockhead (it's high up in the hills!). Portpatrick would be miles off the beaten track - more likely if you were arriving via ferry at Stranraer. Ayr and Dumfries have many connections with Robert Burns, the Scottish poet.

The campus is on the outskirts of Dumfries, follow the signs for the Dumfries Royal Infirmary and you'll find it.
