Day in the country

Am coming up to Aberdeen next weekend for a family reunion but would like a day in the country. Can anyone suggest a nice country pub to have lunch and then go for a nice walk after or a nearby place of interest to visit? Won't want a heavy lunch as we are going to the Ashvale in the evening!

Thanks in anticipation,

Sue

Two things spring to mind immediately; you could take a trip along the A93 and visit Crathes Castle just a few miles before you reach Banchory. There are plenty of things to see there and nice walks in the grounds and gardens. You will have to pay to park on top of your admission fee - which is something I found out just a few days ago. Across the road is the Milton of Crathes an arts and craft centre with a great restaurant. Crathes Castle is an NTS property www.nts.org.uk

Or if you fancy a longer drive (you are coming by car?) then drive up to Ballater where you can find several nice places to have a meal and also loads of places to walk. www.ballaterscotland.com and www.visitdeeside.org.uk

Loch Muick is worth a visit if the weather is good. If you have time take a picnic and do the circular walk round the loch itself, which will take about 3 hours. Again you have to pay to park - £2 - which goes towards the maintenance of footpaths.

Royal Deeside is looking particularly fine just now, with the trees losing thier leaves. The autumn colours are a sight to behold.
