Visiting Huntly soon....Any suggestions for quick outings?

Hi TripAdvisors!

Hubby and I are heading to Huntly soon and we should have around 5-6 days there. We haven't been to that part of Scotland yet, although we've breezed through Inverness & Aberdeen on previous visits. This time we're hoping to explore this part in more depth. I know that Huntly is around 1hr +/- to most places (Inverness/Aberdeen/Aviemore etc). Just wondering which direction to head! Are there any hidden treasures/places to go to close by Huntly? I've heard of Huntly Castle, so we'll no doubt include that. Any other ideas or thoughts? We're not really into whisky tastings etc., so just wondering what else the locals would suggest is worth seeing.

Also, are there any good pubs close by that might have music on? We love traditional scottish food and really enjoy the little family-type pubs as opposed to the larger, more impersonal places.

Any thoughts, suggestions, comments would be welcome!

You could make the drive from Huntly to Ballater in about an hour and this would leave you well placed to visit Royal Deeside for a day. Useful websites for Ballater, Braemar and Royal Deeside are

Plenty to do in the area including a circular walk around Loch Muick (pronounced “Mick” as in Jagger) or a visit to Burn O’Vat outside Ballater, or a visit to Linn of Dee and Linn of Quoich outside Braemar. Great places for a picnic lunch if the weather is kind.

A visit to Crathes Castle in nearby Banchory might interest you and this property is owned and run by the National Trust for Scotland as are several more within an easy drive of Huntly; Fyvie Castle, Haddo House, and Drum Castle to name but three. Inverness is only about 90 minutes drive from Huntly and a visit to nearby Culloden might interest you too. It may be that joining NTS is viable for you if you plan to visit some of its properties. Just a thought. I would say you have to visit Culloden, if you don’t go anywhere else.

Huntly Castle is owned and run by Historic Scotland and so too is nearby Kildrummy Castle and Urquhart Castle and Fort George which are near to Culloden. Again, depending on what you want to do, it might be worth purchasing an Explorer Pass from HS

As you will be in the area I suggest a meal at the Kildrummy Inn one night, although you would need to drive there and back. No live music as far as I know, but I have eaten there several times and never been disappointed.

Hope this helps.

The Bognie Arms Hotel serves very nice traditional Scottish food,I think they serve lunch every day and at weekends lunches and dinners. Best to phone and book a table. Castle Hotel Huntly also nice for a meal or bar meal. You could visit some of the local towns and have a walk round such as Turriff, Pennan ( where the film Local Hero was filmed) Banff, Portsoy and along the coast to Cullen, visiting some of the coastal villages such as Portnockie and Findochty. Then there is Keith and Dufftown are also quite near. You may not be a a whisky drinker but if you want to visit a distillery you are spoilt for choice at Keith and Dufftown, There is Fyvie Castle, Delgaty Castle Turriff, Duff House at Banff. Hope this helps.

hi Scottishbluebell_11,

Thanks for your input too! I really enjoy getting feedback and suggestions from people in the know. It sounds like we won't get too bored! We really enjoy exploring the local scene. We are actually house-sitting for someone so it will be nice to be in one spot for 6 nights. Will definitely check out your eating recommendations, as well as the other person who responded to my post. Always enjoy the local scottish fare. Thanks again.
