trip to Scotland via Edinburgh

we are planning our first trip to Scotland and would like advice on what we should/could see in a week without too much driving.

We will be flying in to Edinburgh and would like to visit the city for a couple of days and then drive around the country for a few days.

We will be hiring a car for the country but was told we should not for the city stay so not sure the best way to go about it. Take a bus to the city on arrival and then pick up car at airport after two days and drive around and return car to airport ? any other suggestions ?

what places are a must see on our trip.

And is it better to stay in B&B's in the contryside or hotels. Are there any you would recommend ?

which hotel in the city would you recommend ?

I suggest that you do not hire a car immediately on arrival. Instead spend three or four nights in Edinburgh and explore on foot or using public transport. The Airport bus (100) runs every few minutes from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre, calling at several stops on the way. There is a huge range of accommodation available depending on your price. The Scottish Tourist Board website www.visitscotland.com gives a good overview.

Whilst in Edinburgh I suggest that you have a day trip to Glasgow by train to see the museums there. See www.glasgowmuseums.com and www.scotrail.co.uk (for train information)

After you have spent some time in the cities, head north over the Forth Bridge and the Fife coast. The towns and little villages of the East Neuk of Fife are delightful - Elie, Pittenweem, Crail, St Andrews... Thereafter head north into the Highlands. The Trossachs also offer beautiful scenery.

There are hundreds of places to stay in Edinburgh to suit all budgets, so do have a look at the hotels listings on tripadvisor and draw up a shortlist of your requirements: price, location, facilties etc. then we will be able to tailor our answer more helpfully.

Again in terms of sightseeing it depends on what your interests are, what time of year you are coming, and how much driving you wish to do. HAve a look at the www.visitscotland.com website for some example driving tours and also www.secretscotland.com and www.undiscoveredscotland.com for more ideas for your research.
