Parking in Derry and walking the walls

We'll be spending a week in Antrim in early August and want to spend a day visiting Derry. Our main plan while we're there is to walk to the walls and visit the Tower Museum (and generally just enjoy the city, so any suggestions will be gratefully received!).

We'll be travelling in two separate cars due to numbers in our group so need to plan car parking in Derry before we set out so we can meet up on arrival. Does anyone have any suggestions for convenient parking in the city centre, reasonably close to the attractions we want to visit? Cost within reason isn't an issue for us.

Also, one of our group is an elderly woman who is reasonably mobile but who is a little concerned about walking the walls. Any general advice on the terrain and whether it's likely to be too challenging for her?

Many thanks - we're really looking forward to our visit!

Thanks for all of this great information - really helpful!

We'll be visiting Derry on a weekday rather than at the weekend, and we'll be aiming to get there as early as we can (provided we can get three teens out of bed and on the road early!) to spend as much time as we can in the city. Would any particular weekday be better/best avoided than any other? We have a list of things we want to do during our week in Northern Ireland but we're flexibile about what we do on any particular day.

Our only time in Derry to date has been spent getting between Derry Airport and Letterkenny on a number of occasions so we're really looking forward to our visit and hope it will be the first real visit of many.

I suspect given what you've told us, you'd rather walk the walls in your time or organise your own tour etc but here is a link for the Derry City Council webiste with their guided walks etc on in the summer in case any other readers are interested.

I used to work in the city and Friday afternoons tended to be very busy but that was due to a lot of the factories closing at lunchtime. There are unfortunately less factories around now. I still think Fridays could be busy with people on long weekends etc so I would tend to avoid it.

You can also check with the city council website re your actual dates in case there are any major events on which might mean more visitors.

Yes, as Ponaire says, Fridays still tend to be busy from lunchtime onwards.

Another good site is www.derryvisitor.com

Regarding organised tours, Martin McCrossan's seem to be popular - you can read some reviews on TA under 'Things to Do' in the Derry Forums.

There are usually a couple of 'Tourist Information Ambassadors' walking on the Walls during the summer months - these staff will assist with any tourist queries or historical facts if you prefer to walk around at your own pace.
