Quaint village between Trim and Larne for one night

We are looking for a village to stop overnight on our way from Trim, County Meath to Larne. We will be driving and want to avoid Belfast. Preferably we want to limit the drive to only a couple of hours so we can have time to actually enjoy the village when we get there. Alternately we may need to drive up to 4 hours and go through to Cushendall (which people have given the thumbs up on other forums) and this would give us most of the next day to enjoy before heading down to Larne for the ferry crossing.

You’re right it would take about 4 hours to get from Trim to Larne especially avoiding Belfast as you would then go via Antrim and either along the A26 to Ballymena and then across to Cushendall or across to Larne and along the A2 Antrim Coast Road to Cushendall (definitely worth the drive).

Have you considered staying at either Hillsborough (…wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough,_County_Down) or Moira (information-britain.co.uk/county109/…)? The journey from Trim would be about 2 hours.

Many thanks Adequate - we have gone with the Cushendall option - i think it will definitely be worth the extra driving on the day because we will have most of the next day to enjoy the area before heading off for the ferry.

In that case, travel to Larne and along the A2 Coat Road to Cushendall, don't cut across to Ballymena. The drive is stunning. You might also want to visit Glenariffe Forest the next day on your way down to the ferry, if you like forest walks.

Recommended quaint village is Carlingford, Co Louth. There is no reason to avoid Belfast unless you are hitting rush hours (ie 0800-0930 and 1630-1800. There is only one solitary traffic light to negotiate.
