Car rental in Belfast

Hello Everyone.

We arrive in Belfast at 8:00 am on Sunday 4/1. We plan on exploring Belfast Sunday all day, staying at least one night and heading out of town most likely midday, early evening on Monday 4/2.

Should we rent a car Sunday and drive into Belfast or wait until Monday afternoon when we will actually need the car? We obviously won't be driving around Belfast. We will end up in Shannon (airport home) 9 days later. Is Dan Dooley the best place to rent from?

Thanks!!!

Hi psychnyc

You do not say into which airport you are arriving....I'm assuming Belfast City? Taxi from here is only 10 mins. There's not much point in paying for an extra days car hire if you intend to stay in & around Belfast City Centre ~ have you specific sights in mind that you'd like to see/do? Public transport is pretty easy within Belfast (although more restricted on a Sunday) but the City Centre shops etc are open all afternoon and Belfast really is quite compact and very walkable.

I have never rented a car in Belfast but I know from other posts that there seem to be some insurance issues (or other) regarding taking a rental car over the border and dropping off ~ Dan Dooley is recommended in many posts as not having these issues ~ perhaps someone else will have definite info?

Hope you have a lovely, lovely time!

Hi psychnyc

Belfast International is about 20/30 mins away from the city centre. Taxi from here will cost about £20-£25, only taxis (approved by the Airport) are allowed to pick-up from the ranks at the terminal exit. The Airport Express Bus is only £6 single and will take you straight into Belfast in about 30mins ~ it sits at the main exit and leaves every 30 mins on a Sunday (I think! ) ~you can check the details at:

http://www.translink.co.uk/airbusservice300.asp)

Airport Express will leave you at the Europa Bus Centre.

Hope this helps.

Enterprise Car Rental are great - they are not at the airports, but have several depots in and around the city and will deliver the car to your hotel to continue your trip. www.enterprise.com

Just a word of warning - there isn't much open or happening in Belfast on Sunday mornings - shops can't open until 1pm, but there are some suggestions on the following web page:

The Belfast Welcome Centre on Donegall Place opens at 11am on Sunday though, and you can enjoy the music in Belfast Cathedral around the same time.

Enjoy!
