St. David's or Fishguard

We'll be in Wales the second week of September. We'll first spend 3 days in Swansea, exploring that area. Then we'll move further west for 3 more days. Which is a better base - St. David's or Fishguard. This is our first trip to Wales and will be seeing general sights and walking. Would like to be in a place where we can have dinner and not do a lot of driving after dark.

Both are fine, however, with your ideas in mind, would suggest st davids, smallest city in the country, but plenty of walking in and around the place, lots of see locally, nice restaurants/cafes/pubs to keep you occupied in the evening, nice beach locally, if you use your car,can get quite quickly to lots of places including Fishguard

if you can go a little futher north to Cardigan or Aberystwyth, there are some beautiful areas here too.

I would suggest that St Davids is probably nicer, and has more accommodation / restaurants (we had a lovely meal at a place called Cwtch on the main street last year). It gets busy in the summer months but should be quieter by September. In fairness, the whole of this area is lovely, but in my opinion St Davids and Solva are better than the areas further north.
